TRT Opens Washington Bureau

- TRT, Turkey's official broadcasting service, has opened its latest office in the National Press Building in the US capital. Present at the opening ceremonies were Minister of State Yilmaz Karakoyunlu, the Turkish Ambassador to the United States, Dr. O. Faruk Logoglu and, TRT General Director Yücel Yener, The well-attended opening began with a speech by the announcer Ms. Nermin Tugulu and was then followed by comments from Mr. Yener.

In his speech, Mr. Yener said that TRT, headquartered in Ankara, in addition to four domestic television channels, uses satellites to reach all of North Africa, Europe, and Asia. Washington DC is TRT's 7th international news bureau; others are located in Berlin, Cyprus, Brussels, Ashkhabad, Cairo, and Baku. He underlined that TRT's aim is to provide accurate, impartial, speedy, and first hand news and that the addition of a DC office has enlarged this chain with one more link.

In his statement, Minister Karakoyunlu emphasized the importance of Washington DC not only for Turkey but also for the whole world because of its influential role in global policies and developments. He said that TRT would continue to keep reaching the Turkish people by providing trustworthy and neutral reporting.

Ambassador Logoglu said that this occasion once again underlined Turkey's role as a leading world government. He highlighted the fact that, today, Turkish peoples were living in a variety of countries all around the world, and that this has created a universal attraction to its culture.

The major sentiment of the day was that the TRT Washington DC News Bureau was a very appropriate expansion for the network due to the United State's role in world economics, global politics and diplomacy. The guests then were treated to delicious Turkish cuisine.
