EU will never accept Turkey
To: The Editor The Turkish Times, August 18, 2002
Turkey will never be accepted into the Euroepan Union. It is the same ploy that the Europeans have been using - divide and rule. The Europeans watched the pillage in Bosnia and Kosovo from the side, hoping that the Serbs would cleanse Europe from the Muslim Turks. Case in point - the massacres that took place in Serbenica. It was in full view of the (so-called) European Peace Keepers. It was as if the Serbs knew that the European soldiers would not interfere. Thanks to American "intolerance" in view of what was happening, the cleansing was stopped. Therefore, how can anyone that knows the European past mentality towards the Turks expect them to make a turn and accept Turkey into the European Union?

Sincerely,

Joey (Huseyin) Murad

What About Armenian Atrocities?
UN Security Council Resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884
call for Armenia to withdraw from Azerbaijani lands
The Honorable President of the United States
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC 20510
Dear Mr. President
After having listened to your speech at the United Nations on September 12th, 2002, I agreed with every appeal, with every demand you made to the world community to make sure the tragic events of September 11, 2001 never occur again.

As Azeri-Americans, we will stand behind the decision of the United States--the only super power in the world--and the decision of the international community on doing whatever it takes to end terrorism anywhere in the world.

Mr. President, in your speech at the United Nations, you talked about UN Security Resolutions against Iraq, you talked about innocent women and children being killed in Iraq and the importance of all these resolutions being implemented by Iraq in compliance with the request of the world community.

Sir, as you know there are also four UN Security Council resolutions and one UN General Assembly resolution against Armenia. The UN has called time after time upon Armenia to withdraw its forces from Azerbaijani lands. Armenian forces also committed brutal killings on Azerbaijani woman and children. On February of 1992, a little Azerbaijani town called Khojaly became a symbol of brutality. Armenian forces backed with Russian military committed what the Human Rights Watch has called the "largest massacre of the conflict to date". The New York Times wrote about the "truckload of bodies" and reported instances of "scalping". The murder of hundreds of innocent women and children in Khojaly--an unprecendented cruelty by Armenian forces in Azerbaijan--has revealed the true nature of Armenians towards the Azeri people and nation.

All four UN Security Council Resolutions (# 822, 853, 874 and 884) call for Armenia to withdraw from Azerbaijani lands. Armenia occupies almost 20% of the lands belonging to Azerbaijan. Why aren't these resolutions being implemented and enforced? What good are these resolutions if they are not backed up by UN presence and American political and economic pressure? Why do we have an organization called United Nations? Why aren't UN forcing Armenia, a member of it's own governing body, to respect the will and decisions of the international community? Many hundreds and thousands of Azeri-Americans want to know why? These atrocities committed against the Azeri population by Armenia is just as devastating to Azerbaijan as the terrorist attacks on our country. We must, by all means, implement and enforce, all UN resolutions, throughout the world in order to stop rogue nations for carrying out crimes against humanity.

Mr. President, again I want to assure you that as Azeri-Americans here in this great nation, are standing by you with every decision you make to put an end to these tragedies and brutal assaults on freedom, democracy, and a free and safe world. You have proven your strength as a leader and we hope you will make the right decisions to ensure a peaceful future for all the women and children of the world.

Respectfully,
Tomris Azeri
President-Azerbaijan Society of America

Turkish-Cypriots do not need territory or municipal authority
To: The Editor, The Washington Post,September 5, 2002
I am puzzled by the subtle suggestion in the op-ed entitled "Cyprus and the Clash of Civilizations" co-authored by John Stilides and Paul Glastris of the Western Policy Center (WP, August 30, 2002) that as a means of resolving the Cyprus issue, "the Greek side would give up some land and municipal authority in return for both sides joining a federated state."

Unless this is a misprint, we are left with the ludicrous assertion that the whole of Cyprus is Greek territory, some of which must be ceded to the Turks. The Turkish side is demanding neither territory nor municipal authority from the Greek side but the recognition of its equal status as one of the two co-owners of Cyprus.

As far as a "federated state" is concerned, the leaders of the two sides, Messrs. Denktas and Clerides, at the ongoing face-to-face talks, have already moved beyond such restrictive labels at the request of the United Nations Secretary-General, and are working on the modalities of a new partnership. As they meet the UN chief on September 6 in Paris, their task would be made easier if all concerned avoided terms and assertions likely to confuse the issue.

Sincerely,

Osman Ertug
Representative
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
