The Classical Tradition in Anatolian Carpets
September 13, 2002 - February 16, 2003, The Textile Museum
The art of Turkish pile carpets represents one of the world’s oldest and richest carpet-weaving traditions. The Classical Tradition in Anatolian Carpets provides a unique opportunity to explore the artistry of this enduring tradition, which has been the subject of wonder and admiration in both the East and West for hundreds of years. The exhibition features more than 50 Turkish carpets, dating from the 15th to 19th centuries, drawn from the collections of The Textile Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum and several private collectors. A full-color catalogue is available from The Textile Museum Shop. Lectures and presentations at the 25th Annual Rug Convention, October 18-20, 2002, will draw inspiration from this exhibition.

BOOK REVIEW

The Classical Tradition in Anatolian Carpets
Walter B. Denny (2002)
The creative tension between tradition and innovation in the development of the Anatolian carpet is the central theme of this catalog just as it has been throughout all of art history. This book examines the continuity of the classical carpets from the fifteenth century to the village weavings produced later, and also focuses upon outside influences, technical limitations, and challenges and design evolutions. Drawn primarily from the Textile Museum's core of masterpieces acquired by its founder George Hewett Myers, these visually stunning and intellectually challenging weavings highlight the ageless beauty of Anatolia's rich and abundant carpet tradition. Accompanies an exhibit at the Textile Museum in Washington D.C. from September 13, 2002, to February 16, 2003.
