Turkish Americans Stay Active in Chicago

Mehmet Okur's Pistons Beat Grizzlies 109-86
The Turkish Times-The Pistons routed the Memphis Grizzlies 109-86 Friday night to move to 2-0 after going 8-0 in the exhibition season. Turkish basketball star Mehmet Okur is off to a fast start this season with the Pistons and scored 6 points against the Grizzlies. The other Turkish star playing in the NBA is Hidayet "Hedo" Turkoglu of Sacramento Kings. (For their web sites see www.nba.com for Hedo and sportsillustrated.cnn.com for Mehmet Okur.)

"We were playing well in the preseason and we really wanted to win these first two home games before we go out west,'' said Richard Hamilton, who led Detroit with 23 points. ``We were focused tonight and we really played well."

Associate Press noted that "there was a large contingent of Turkish fans in the Palace's upper deck, and they spent much of the second half chanting and singing in honor of Pistons rookie Mehmet Okur. Okur made his NBA debut with 8:07 to play and finished with six points and three rebounds."

 

Turkish Journalist Sema Emiroglu on C-SPAN
The Turkish Times-Veteran Turkish journalist Sema Emiroglu of center-liberal daily Milliyet has participated in a 2-hour long C-SPAN program on Friday, October 25, 2002 in a roundtable discussion on the international news of the day with foreign journalists who cover the United Nations. Emiroglu is Milliyet's U.N. Bureau Chief in New York City. Other participants of the panel moderator by C-SPAN's Brian Lamb were James Bone, The Times of London, New York Bureau Correspondent; and Sanaa Youssef, Akhbar Elyom (Egypt), U.N. Bureau Chief . In the program the three veteran journalists discussed many current issue including the recent UN resolutions regarding Iraq, President Bush's Iraq policy, Turkey's position as a East-West bridge and role model in the Middle East. Ms. Emiroglu has also participated in another high-profile discussion panel in October in the New York City where similar issues were discussed with the participation of such "celebrity journalists" like CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

Houston Turkish Festival
is Huge Success

The Turkish Times-The 12th Houston Turkish Festival that took place on October 12 became a big party for Houston and was attended by over 2,500 visitors. Organized by the American Turkish Association of Houston, the festival featured the Osmangazi University Folk Dance Company, as well as folk dancers of the ATA-Houston, the Houston International Folk Dance Company, the Houston-based Turkish Rock group PASHA and the famous Turkish music group AYNA. The product of the hard work of ATA-Houston president Serhan Secmen and his board featued a total of 63 artists and was run by over 150 volunteers. Festival sponsors included the Turkish Promotion Fund, the Assembly of Turkish American Associations, Osmangazi University , Canakkale University, Efes Pilsen, Kavaklidere and Uludag Gazozlari.

Turkish Kids Travel the Globe
at the Pistons' 2002 "Read to Achieve" Kick Off Event

More than 300 children from elementary schools around the Metropolitan Detroit Area, including Turkish-American kids, attended the 2002 "Read to Achieve" Kick Off Event at The Palace in Detroit. The students traveled to over 15 different reading stations representing various countries from around the world, where they read and listened to stories with the Detroit Pistons, Swin Cash and Astou Ndyiae-Diatta from the Detroit Shock, and Detroit government officials. BOSTON TURKISH FESTIVAL
October 29 - November 30, 2002
BOSTON TURKISH FESTIVAL (BTF) was first organized in 1996 for the first time and has taken place every year ever since.

The uniqueness of BTF is that it is the first month-long Turkish festival in the United States reflecting various dimensions of the Turkish culture. Purpose of the Festival is not only to support talented artists and musicians in the region.

BTF also plays the role of a cultural bridge between two countries, as well as other communities in the New England area and beyond, for a better and enlightened mutual understanding, and to explore each other's culture. Most of the Festival events take place in public places and there is no admission fee for majority of the activities to better serve the diverse Boston community. Festival is open to the public.

Ramazan ayi 06 Kasim Carsamba gunu baslamaktadir. 05 Kasim Sali aksami ilk teravih namazi kilinacak ve o gece sahura kalkilarak Carsamba gunu oruc tutulacaktir.

Imsakiyedeki imsak vakti en son yeme icme zamanini gostermektedir. O gunku imsak vakti yeme icmeye son verilip orucun basladigi an demektir. Aksam saati ise iftar saatini yani oruclarin acilacagi, yeme icmenin baslayacagi zamani gostermektedir. Camiye gelmeleri, cemaata katilmalari kolaylastirmak ve teravih namazinda camiye gelmek isteyenlere yardimci olmak niyetiyle ramazan ayi boyunca Greenbelt, Maryland’daki camimizde teravih namazi 7.30 pm de kilinacaktir.

Teravih namazlarinda bayanlar icin de yer tahsis edilmis olup arzu eden bayanlar teravih namazina gelebileceklerdir.

Tanismaya, gorusmeye, kaynasmaya ve dayanismaya imkan hazirlamak icin ramazan ayi boyunca her cumartesi gunu camide iftar programlari olacak, herkes bir seyler getirerek hep beraber toplu olarak iftar yapilacaktir. Ayrica camimizde iftar vermek isteyenler olursa bu konuda kendilerine yardimci olunacak, gerek kucuk capli, gerekse daha kalabalik iftar programlari vermek mumkun olacaktir. Allahin izni ile her gecen gun hizmetlerimiz artmakta ve hizmet goturdugumuz insanlar arasinda Turkce bilmeyenler veya Turkcesi oldukca zayif olanlar da yer almaktadir.

Faydali olacagini , memnuniyet ve takdirle karsilanacagini umit ettigim bu hizmetimizle esasinda gec kalmis bir hizmetin baslangicini yapiyoruz. Onumuzdeki gunlerde diger gelismeleri de sizlerle paylasmaktan memnunluk duyacagiz.
