- In reply to the on going debates concerning the place of women in
Islam, a panel discussion was presented at the George Washington University
Club on November 20. The presentation, aptly titled "Modernity and Islam:
Experiences of Turkish Women," was moderated by Oya Bain, ATAA Capital
Region VP. The speakers included Zeyno Baran, CSIS, Dr Engin Imel Holmstrom,
Filiz Odabas Geldiay, VP of Ataturk Society of America, and ATAA executive
director, Guler Koknar. More

Spirit of volunteerism and civic activism is
live and well in Ankara
Ercument Kilic, ATAA President-Elect, Ankara,
Turkey - A one page newsletter has been distributed to the neighborhood
and makes a plea: "We no longer desire any type of business in our neighborhood
such as noisy private hospitals, night clubs, and parking lots with
attendants who tend to disturb the peace! We don't object to anyone
making a living but, we believe in serenity in our streets."More

ATAA-TUSIAD Summer Internship Program (ATSIP)
In Washington, DC
ATAA (Assembly of Turkish American Associations),
and TUSIAD (Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association) are
launching an 8-week internship program for students and recent college
graduates, during June and July of 2003, to work at the offices of U.S.
Congress members, and the offices of ATAA in Washington DC. In addition,
there will be guidance for internship opportunities at such Washington
DC think tanks as Washington Institute (WINEP). More
