Turkey Approves U.S. Use of Bases
Suzan
Fraser, The Associated Press, ANKARA, Turkey (AP)
- Turkey's foreign minister said Tuesday, December 4 that his country
would allow the United States to use military bases here if the United
Nations approves military action against neighboring Iraq. Yasar Yakis
spoke as U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz was in Turkey
to lobby for Turkish support of an operation against Iraq. Turkey is
concerned that a war in Iraq could lead to the division of the country,
with Kurds in northern Iraq declaring a separate state. More

- The 58th Turkish Cabinet list was approved by President Ahmet Necdet

Turkey Prepares for Iraqi Refugees
The Guardian (UK),November 30, 2002, CUKURCA, Turkey
(AP) - Kemal Korkmaz remembers the last time there was a war in Iraq,
when hundreds of thousands of refugees fled on foot across the snowbound
mountains to Turkey, and he and other Turkish Kurds gave them food and
shelter. More than 1,500 Iraqi Kurds died of starvation, dehydration and
preventable illnesses as they struggled to reach the Turkish border. There,
poorly prepared relief officials lacked the tents and rations to help
them. More

Sailing Through the Dire
Straits
Turkish ships will go through some rather dire
straits during this holiday month of December. For many Turkish
observers the phrase "dire straits" probably sounds like the standard
fare until one takes a peek at what's on Ankara's plate. On December
12 and 13, the European Union (EU) Copenhagen Summit will admit
Greek-Cyprus as a new member and perhaps also extend a date to Turkey
to start discussing the date on which Turkey's membership process
could begin. Yes, "a date for a date," or "an appointment for an
appointment." And at the end Turkey may not be admitted to EU at
all, raising serious doubts in many minds as to whether EU is really
ready to bridge the widening gap between the Christian West and
the Muslim East. Secular Turkey is the best candidate EU has got
to form a bridge between these increasingly withdrawing universes.

New Election for Erdogan, Feb 03
In Turkey, new political realities on the ground are creating
their own "corrections." Erdogan is the new de facto
leader of Turkey. However, he is not even a member of the Turkish
Parliament. So new solutions are rushing in to remedy the problem.
Nature abhors a vacuum.
Turkish Supreme Election Board (TSEB) has cancelled
the election results in Siirt. Fadil Akgunduz an independent
deputy from Siirt, will lose his seat. Akgunduz had been a principal
in the Jet-Pa embezzlement scandal. But it seems TSEB forgot
all about that when they approved Akgunduz candidacy before
the elections. Now all of a sudden the bureaucracys memory
is refreshed.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan and (yes!) Necmettin Erbakan
will be able to run in the new February by-election. There will
be no 10% threshold. Thus any party that could not enter Turkish
Parliament in Nov 3 election will be able to do so in February.
