Let's Support Sister-Schools
Dear Turkish American parents: Over the years,
one of the problems we as Turkish-Americans have faced (along
with many other ethnic groups) is how to involve our children
in our Turkish American activities. This is a common problem to
all of us whether the family is Turkish and/or an inter-ethnic
family. Many times it is difficult to have our children participate
in a Turkish American picnic even if sometimes we invite our children's
non-Turkish friends to join our activities. Turkish American children
who do not see each other often feel alienated when they attend
club activities.
Thanks to efforts of some mothers, Internet groups
have been formed where young parents including their children
meet to visit children's museums and other children friendly locations
in groups. These outings have proved very positive for the parents
as well as the children. They have brought up some very important
questions into light, e.g. what would happen to children whose
parents might be killed in an accident. Some of these mothers
have arranged to visit lawyers to draw up documents that would
protect their children in case of such a catastrophic eventuality.
The subject that I would like to talk about, today,
is finding a sister-school from Turkey for your child's school.
Many of you have close ties to Turkey where finding a sister-school
would not be a problem. It would be advisable to have all the
necessary information about the school in Turkey before approaching
your child's school. It would be especially good if the school
has Internet connection and find a suitable class that would correspond
to your child's grade and present these documents along with an
introductory letter to the school principal, homeroom teacher,
and advisor. An introductory package about Turkey, children in
Turkey, map, flag, etc., could be prepared and also included.
Many of us are working on sister-city relationships.
While this is a very commendable act, it takes time and tremendous
amount of effort. A sister-school program might be a little less
time consuming and thus easier for many parents to handle.
If you need help approaching your child's school,
please get in touch with me.
