Once Bitten
Peter Beinart, The New Republic Online, February
28, 2003 - The Bush administration is good at punishing America's
enemies. But it's far worse at rewarding America's friends. As Franklin
Foer noted in these pages last year (see "Fabric Softener," March
4, 2002), the White House responded to Pakistani President Pervez
Musharraf's crucial support against his former ally, the Taliban,
by denying his request to lift U.S. tariffs on his country's textiles.
More recently, it has ignored Hamid Karzai's pleas to extend international
peacekeeping throughout Afghanistan. And it has stiffed Mexican President
Vicente Fox's calls for a new immigration accord, embittering the
pro-American president and undermining his domestic support.

Turkey and the War on Iraq: It Isn't Just about
Money
Helena Kane Finn, Council on Foreign Relations,
February 20, 2003 - Like other European countries, Turkey faces strong
public opposition to the war on Iraq. Turkey is a democracy, the only
truly secular parliamentary democracy in the Muslim world. Turkey
was one of the first countries in the world to extend its condolences,
and expression of support for the war on terrorism after 9/11. Not
only that, Turkey demonstrated its willingness to send its troops
in support of the war in Afghanistan. Indeed, Turkey took the leadership
of ISAF (the International Security Assistance Force) in Afghanistan
from June 2002 until February 2003. Gen. Zorlu, the ISAF commander
received high marks from both the Pentagon and the Afghans for this
effort. More
A Trip To Remember
Behiç Akgün - In June of 2002, 37 young
Turkish-Americans from across the nation and I were invited on a trip
to Turkey that none of us will soon forget. We were to be guests of
the National Security Council and receive an inside view of Turkey.
We were to meet many people, and see many different things, all to give
us a better understanding and a different perspective of our home country.
With this knowledge and experience, we would be able to come back to
America and aid in the awareness of Turkey, both politically and culturally.

"Show your respect and stand by your friend!"
February 8, 2003. RE: Conservative Broadcaster/Talk Show Host/Florida
U.S. Senate Candidate Andy Martin Condemns Bush's Plan for Turkish
'Ethnic Cleansing' In Kurdish Iraq, Says President's Policy
is 'Clinically Insane'.
To: Andy Martin
Dear Sir, As my country of origin Turkiye tries to deal with
the aftermaths of the worst earthquake and the worst financial
crisis of its 80 year history, it is not hesitating in its obligation
to stand firm by its ally the USA in her fight against terrorism
and a dictator who obviously does not own a mirror. This type
of commitment is not new for Turks. More
Former President Bill Clinton joins Turks in
the mourning of their mutual friend Sam Weems
Mahmut Esat Ozan
To The Turkish Times-The following historic letter was received
recently by Mrs Weems, the widow of late Sam Weems who passed
away last month in Hazen, Arkansas. It is from the former President
of the United States of America, who hails from the same State
where Sam had made many friends and was well-liked by one and
all. His dream "The Ataturk Peace Institute" was to have been
built facing the Clinton Library on the Arkansas River in Little
Rock, Arkansas. More
"Armenians have demolished
and looted more than 700 Azerbaijani settlements"
TO: Rep. Frank Pallone, US House of Representatives. Washington,
D.C. January 29, 2003
Congressman Pallone: The publicity given by the Armenian-American
channels to your letters addressed to the President of Azerbaijan
and dated January 8 and January 13 drove me to write you. I
have no illusions that you may want to consider reality, since
I well understand the motivation behind your indiscriminate
advocacy of the "Armenian cause", as well as your
long-standing anti-Azerbaijani position, of which the two letters
are yet another proof. More
