Turkish girl to star in New Zealand/US film
The
Turkish Times - A US/New Zealand production romantic comedy called "My
Gardener," mostly shot in Christchurch, New Zealand in February
and March this year, is starring Ayse Tezel, who was born in London
to a Turkish father and New Zealand mother. Ayse still has strong links
to Turkey with family back there and tries to visit often. More

the "View From the Top" of 2003 Addy Awards
The Turkish Times - BETHESDA MD May 14 2003 - The
Dan Rosenthal Co. today recognized creative team member Serdar Sirtanadolu
for being a tremendous building block to the top. The agency received
the highest number of awards at the ADDY Show, a prestigious event recognizing
outstanding work in advertising, including two Special Judges Awards
and Mr. Sirtanadolu counted nine of those 22 like his own. More

Internationally Acclaimed pianist Aysegül Durakoglu
Leyla Harfoush Special for The Turkish Times -At
the invitation of the Turkish American Womens Scholarship Fund,
acclaimed pianist Aysegul Durakoglu performed at University of Chicagos
International House on Sunday, May 4, 2003 to an audience of more than
100 people. She presented an enchanting program that included pieces
from composers such as Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy and Beach. Mrs.
Durakoglu also played folk songs from composer Cemal Resid Rey who is
from her homeland, Turkey. The recital was followed by a reception where
guests had the opportunity to meet with Mrs. Durakoglu and enjoy delicious
Turkish pastries and desserts. Mrs. Durakoglu lives in the New York
area.
TAWSF is a non-profit associated established a dozen years
ago to raise funds for female students in Turkey who otherwise would
not be able to get a university education. Each recipient applies to
TAWSF and, if selected, received $100 a month in scholarship funds.
There are usually 4 students that are supported each year.
"This reception was so successful in enjoyment and fund-raising that
we may be able to support an extra student," said Dr. Ayhan Lash, founder
of TAWSF. Members, numbering around 20, hold three or four cultural
and social events to raise the necessary funds.
Ercument Akman Organizes SILK ROAD
Film Fest 2004
Nine countries to send films to March 12-20,
2004 festival
The Turkish Times - Ercument Akman, the architect,
film connoisseur, Istanbul International Film Festival jury member,
and an active member of the local Turkish-American organization ATA-DC,
has added another feather to his busy cap by founding the "SILK
ROAD Film Fest 2004" to take place March 12-20 2004 in Washington

Turkish Film UZAK wins double header in
Cannes
The Turkish Times - Turkish actors Muzaffer
Ozdemir and Mehmet Emin Toprak won the "Best Actor Award"
in this years Cannes International Film Festival for their
performances in UZAK, a Turkish film by Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
A tribute was paid to the young actor Toprak who
tragically died in a car accident last December.
This years GRAND JURY PRIZE in Cannes was
presented by English popstar Sting to the Turkish director Nuri
Bilge Ceylan for his UZAK.
The prestigious Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) was finally
given to Gus Van Sant's ELEPHANT. "I thought I was finished
tonight but no. I have been trying for years to get one of my
films in to Cannes. Thank you everyone and a particular thanks
to my DP Harris Savides and Vive La France!" Van Sant said.
